I wanted to show you this gorgeous hand sewn patchwork cushion cover I bought recently.

It is hand stitched and there are millions of the teeniest little stitches you have ever seen.

From the 40's???

What I like most about it though is the inside/reverse.

You know me, anything textured, layered and frayed leaves me weak at the knees.

Speaking of frayed etc...I wanted to also show you this textile collage I made for thegallery at Bishops Castle, Shropshire. An exhibition 'Talking about the Weather' to be held soon. The text, which I took from the back of a holiday postcard is incorporated into layers of paper and fragments of patchwork cottons and quilt. Embroidery and buttons. I found it a real challenge having to work to a 'brief' of sorts, instead of my usual creative wanderings.

Below, two notebooks covered in a textile collage too.

done now though and I am happy with how they worked out.

It started with one Bunny brooch and then all of a sudden there were three!

Now for something completely different...

I am very happy to tell you I have booked my first workshop. I have created a new blog, devoted to details etc. of the workshops. Going to see how this one goes before booking more, but I do so hope that holding workshops will be a regular thing. The venue is at weston-park A beautiful stately home on the border of Staffordshire and Shropshire. I have booked a classroom in the grounds, which borders the woods and is connected to the Granary Grill and Shop. The first workshop will be Haberdashery Brooches. Here is the kind of thing I had in mind...

I want the workshop to be a chance to play, be inspired by others and enjoy the opportunity to be amongst like minded, enjoying a day of uninterrupted creativity.

Well another festive season over.

Christmas has gone back in the loft and the last of the dust accumulated over two weeks has been dealt with and vacuumed.

So we turn and face the new year.

I sincerely hope that all is well in your world and you have exciting plans for the forthcoming year.

You may remember that I had purchased a beautiful dress pattern from merchantandmills

just before Christmas.

As I suspected, my dress making skills have clearly a long way to go and I produced, in a dark brown/ green wool suiting, what I can only describe as a Monk's Habit and very badly too.

My husband's face was a picture when I popped it on to show him...

he clearly struggled with the desire to say "oh no, oh goodness no",

but knowing how I had laboured over it, he managed to reign himself in :-)

I ended up chopping a good foot in length, off the bottom of the dress and made it into a long top,

which doesn't look quite so terrible.

With a little tweeking and lots of practice, I will get there!

Onto the little 'giveaway' mentioned in my previous post.

I have had a lovely couple of surprises just lately.

Firstly, back in October rebecca from poshyarns asked if I could submit a couple of images for possible inclusion in an article 'What's on the Web', she was writing for Handmade Living.

I also received a copy of Sew Somerset and towards the back ...

a small feature about one of my needlecases.

I am a very lucky girl.

I have spent today updating Folksy, Etsy and madebyhandonline.

Over the last ten years or so, as a mum of two growing girls, I could and still now, never wholly rely on going to my cosmetics and finding it all there. Nothing is sacred....tweezers, mascara, hair brush, straighteners...oh the list goes on and on. I'm sure many of you will understand this phenomena. So I thought that this little zipped purse/cosmetics pouch might make things perfectly clear.

Two handbags with long handles for wearing across the body.

Finally onto a pattern I bought from this sublime Hay-on-Wye Drapers merchant and mills.

They have a core collection of dress patterns, fabrics and notions.

The patterns are a thing of beauty, made of card.

Simple and beautiful.

So here is my pattern for the Trapeze dress.

I have ordered my pure wool suiting fabric from eBay and I will show you the mess I make of it,

when completed.

I can put a bag and a purse together, but a dress is another matter.

Wish me luck, I may be gone some time!

I had a lovely day last Saturday at the Crafty Vintage Fair.

I could have spent a fortune.

My sister was also at the Fair selling her stunning paper cut work deckle-edged

I wanted to tell you that I have been published, in a book.

Mixed Media articles from the first six years of Cloth Paper Scissors have been collated into a book of inspiration and techniques for mixed media work.

In the article I explained how I worked on old envelopes...

At the back of the book is a page dedicated to the Contributors.

Back to last Saturday's Fair...

the day was made even more special by being opposite rachel barker...

oh my, oh my...

Being the greedy so and so that I am, I wanted everything...

The hand made plate at the back here...absolutely gorgeous.

I couldn't stop staring at her work all day and at every given moment I was drawn to stand in front of her exhibit.

and finally, a few pieces popped into my Etsy shop.

The fabric I used for the purses here, I think is 1940's, it has embroidery transfer design applied, which I have used as a back drop to my screen printed designs and embroidery etc.
Lined with cotton ticking.

Hello!

At a Flea market, on impulse one day, I parted with some pennies and bought

six or so pairs of very old,

ladies kid leather gloves.

They are exquisitely made.

Skilled hands put these together, tiny MoP buttons, teeny tiny stitches, with size markings/stamps too, which makes me think they might be French? Don't know.

Some of the gloves are a little grubby...so in my wisdom, I decided to see if one would wash...

yes, I know, I said wash...

Noooooo, I hear you scream.

In my defense I was feeling very tired and my brain these days is puddled.

Anyway, after a brisk handwash (of just the one glove) and a dry in the breeze...

this is the monster that I was left with....

not exactly pretty is it?

So...seeing that these very slender, 'seen better days' gloves are in need of ...

what they call these days ...'upcycling'? Is that the term? I call it reworking.

I chose a glove, not that nasty ruined one and cut and sewed two of the fingers...

for ears for Beryl,

Beryl the Bunny Brooch.

She is made of old, worn patchwork and ticking cotton...

she is, of course, inspired by the iconic Julie Arkell's work.

Here is Beryl, having a chat with a chicken, who doesn't seem to be very interested...

and onto brooches.

I have constructed these brooches to highlight the beauty and the skill of the tiny,
sometimes hidden perfect details.

The button holes are so exquisitely worked and that number, oh, so lovely.

I would never ever buy new kid leather, but these gloves were one step away from being skipped,

so I have tried to put them to some sort of new purpose.

The brooches are only a couple of inches square.

I have used very old quilt snippets too, to add more texture and colour.

This brooch is made from the glove inside out, to highlight the alphabet which has been stamped onto the leather.

A little hand embroidery too and always a button.

Finger tips across the top.

So there you are, I hope I haven't confused you with my strange ramblings about old gloves.

Change of subject...I thought I would mention that I have this very beautiful piece of original French Wallpaper for sale in my eBay shop. I think it is hand blocked?
(Any info would be greatly appreciated).

It is truly beautiful and hard to part with, but University Fees do not pay themselves.

The current husband and I had a really lovely day out yesterday and I wanted to tell you about it.

Herefordshire is an hour away by car and every September they hold h-Art ... Open Studios and other art based events. So guide book in hand, off we go...

Finally, onto therodd The Rodd is the home of the Sidney Nolan Trust. The Sidney Nolan Trust is a registered charity, established by Sidney Nolan in 1985 for the purpose of supporting the work and development of creative artists and musicians.

I have been making needlecases, using vintage French mangle cloth...

it has a beautifully smooth soft cotton feel to it, with a nice red stripe running along one edge. Love.

Felt in the mood to collage a few envelopes too!

Hello!

I hope all is well with you and yours.

Me? Well, I'm still struggling with fibromyalgia .

It's a real problem, as dealing with constant pain, brain fog and extreme fatigue, all of the time, no let up, is a damn nuisance. I have, however, been referred to a Pain Clinic, where I will receive advice on self help i.e. breathing/relaxing techniques, learning to pace activity, dealing with depression etc. So I am very much looking forward to starting that soon.

Anyroadup, enough of that...

I wanted to tell you how happy I am to have been honoured with a published article in

Stampington's Somerset Holidays and Celebrations, just out on the news stands, I believe.

There has been lots going on here, hence the lack of posts just recently.

My Mum and I always visit the NEC, Birmingham every August for the

International Festival of Quilts.

I must admit I did not get to see much of the quilts on display, as I can only manage a limited amount of time standing and walking, before I am cream crackered.

I use the show to stock up on threads and general fabrics and there is certainly plenty of those to choose from.

I also came across the Selvedge stand, which for me, was so interesting...

Just to let you know that I will be having a stand at the new cotswold vintage fair, tomorrow Saturday 27th at Toddington Village Hall, Glos.

Really looking forward to meeting up with friends and hoping for good weather,

as I will be in the Marquee!

Very old American Suffolk Puffs, which I have made into necklaces, with beautiful Mother of Pearl buttons. I really enjoy making these and as I have mentioned before, the time, worn, soft quality of the 'Puffs' are exquisite.

My eyebrows were blocked, false eyelashes and a beauty spot (ha!) applied...scary isn't it?

Hello!

If you are a gardener, or love gardens, I'm sure you will know of David Austin Roses.

As the Nursery HQ is just 15 minutes drive from where I live,

I thought you may like to accompany me on a visit.

The above building is newish and very posh.

The British weather has played havoc with the roses,
so I have missed the best of the flowering season
and the roses that were in bloom, were looking pretty sorry.

There are gardens that you can walk around,

which is great because you obviously get a sense of the scale/size of the plant.

There are plenty of vistas with sculptures.

I could have happily bought every rose, they are all so pretty and smell so sweetly.

As you can see, they are all very well labelled, within the gardens.

Below, Anne Boleyn rose, no blooms to see, as she had been dead headed!

Hello!

You may remember these Cotton Reel Prims, I made a while back.

I really enjoyed making them, but they were very time consuming to make.

I wanted to revisit the design, but didn't want to fiddle faddle for hours making them.

The following pages are from my sketchbook...

I thought you may like to follow my thought process,

strange as it may be ...

Below, I wanted to kind of recreate the Prim thing but not as severe in facial expression.

Getting the expression right, is the key and the eyes say it all.

More sketches.

I like the thought of flowers growing from the top of a head, an expression of beautiful thoughts....

So, I decided to translate these thoughts onto paper. Old, worn, faded, foxed, lovely old paper. Using free machine embroidery, not the easiest of techniques, very unforgiving.

Eyes overworked and looking a little demonic here.

Dirk looks on and wonders why he isn't included in all this???

So here are a few more trials on various old papers.

and here are my three pieces that I am happy with and are now in my Etsy shop.

The back of this envelope was too beautiful to not use. So I detached it and added it underneath.

I have applied the whole thing onto a very old piece of faded quilt.

She is called 'Lavina Lopsided Lovely'

and she has a passionate love for buttons.

Here is 'Loretta Lopsided Lovely'.

She loves flowers and has flowery thoughts go through her mind all the time.

She smells pretty, like a flower too.

'Lucinda Lopsided Lovely'...her passion is for birds.

She doesn't mind that they stand on her head,

but only one at a time please.

Hello,

you may or may not remember the bowl of Suffolk Puffs/Yo Yo's that I purchased from Gertie in Cornwall a few weeks back.

This is what I made with a few...

Double sided necklace.

With matching buttons both sides, except for the big button.

The thing is with these beautiful American 30's? circles of fabric, they need to be seen both sides...texture of the gather and the print of the other side.

So I made the necklace, so that it can be worn either way...simples!

Old, soft, worn, faded fabric, lace and buttons...all my favs.

I bought a pack of old Cash's name tabs at the weekend...everything now has a name tab stitched on!

We got into trouble at school if you didn't have your name sewn into the back of your jumper or blazer.

Wanted to show you this lovely old picture, an eBay purchase from America.

Isn't it just lovely?

I am looking forward to incorporating the Bunny, maybe the child aswell into imagery for a purse or needlecase.

I love the shoes the child is wearing, with the little boot buttons. I wonder who he was?

.I also wanted to show you my little sales area at thewearhouse Ludlow, Shropshire. It's only a small alcove, one side of the fireplace, in a lovely room on the ground floor. I am very pleased with the space and really want to concentrate on my hand made pieces there. If you ever visit Ludlow, make sure you drop in at The Wear-House, used to be Zani Lady...there are so many gorgeous things to buy, (I don't mean mine).

A purse with chain handle. Dirk, Doug and Derek upto high jinks, pretending they belong to the circus, no doubt.

Lovin' the feedsack cotton at the bottom of the needlecase...it took all my strength to cut into it and use it :-)

Now onto a new idea/design.

Seeing that nearly everyone these days has some sort of gadget...mobile/cell phone, MP3, Blackberry, iPhone/pod, you get the idea, I thought it would be useful to have a padded pocket, to keep it safe, or at least from being scratched.

So, we have

The pockets measure about 4" x just 5.5", which just about caters for all gadgets and gizmos.

Back from our travels in France.

thank you for all of your thoughts on who should come away with us to France soon, the jury is still out!

I have revisited my bird design here and have been screen printing onto fabric, adding Suffolk Puffs and lots of embroidery, as ususal...

I am happy with the free machine embroidery I used with this...the black stitching picks up the screen printed bird. I have used hand embroidery too.

I shall be using this design a little more in the future...I like making it.

Running the machine over the old, worn patchwork is really pleasing.

Talking of Suffolk Puffs, I bought these from gertie They are very old, gently faded, with the most lovely prints and I feel so happy to have these...pop over to Gertie if you can...she is the kindest, sweet lady and has just relocated, with her family to Portscatho, Cornwall from Germany, a huge undertaking for them. It's great having them here.

I also had a commission to make recently, for another lovely lady Fee, who celebrated a special birthday, her husband is a 'one of a kind' and I have been very happy to be a small part of the celebrations. Fee lost her Daddy when she was small and I was asked to incorporate a copy of a photo of him. Fee also has a 'thang' for shoes. She has the most beautiful and happy blog, I urge you to pop over when you have a mo.

Moving on and a very odd twist of subject. We are very priviledged to house a maternity roost of Pipistrelle bats every late Spring. We sometimes have the odd bat fly around a room but normally they do not bother us and we certainly do not bother them. A few years ago, however, the weather had been dreadful and many of the babies were abandoned and started dropping through the cracks around the loft door...fortunately, I made a very good contact, a local couple who hand rear orphaned bats staffordshirebatsgroup ...a few of the babies were bought back to us a few weeks later and reintroduced to their fellow Bat kind.

Well, the night before last, 10pm to be precise, I heard the current husband announce 'oh spiffing', which was very restrained! I just knew it would be a Bat, as we had counted 90 mums out, watching from the garden, the evening before (90 mums + 90 babies = 200 or so Bats) and I knew we would, at sometime, have an escapee. Sure enough, there was a baby hanging from the loft door, oh heck.
Below, next morning, when I opened loft hatch,

three day old Pipistrelle.

I gave 'Hammer' a drink of water from a cotton wool bud...

I was on the phone to the Bat group before you could say Christopher Lee.
Thankfully, they were able to take over and took 'Hammer' off my hands.
Thank heavens for dedicated and passionate Bat loving rearing folk.

Well, here in the land of Pie Country of Staffordshire, there has been some rather troublesome goings on.

Dixie, One Eyed Wonkey and Wonkey Donkey found out by pure chance that there had been a celebration of the first day of Summer, in the Pie Country of Central California, where there is a smell of brine in the air, warm sunshine, flowers and birds... farmerjulie , donkey, hedgehog and all their friends gathered, to eat delicious home baked pies to celebrate the coming of Summer...and to be honest with you,

my three donkeys felt left out and told me so...

So I quickly rustled up a party table for them, spread with the prettiest of patchwork, the sweetest plate in all the world, bedecked with Violas and party flower hats...

but see, no hand baked pie for this hungry threesome, what is a person to do in such circumstances? (Answer: run to the local Spar and buy a packet of French Fancies) Pretty cakes, sickly sweet, full of E numbers and not quite in the spirit of the magnificent farm party over the sea and a bit, but .....

here they are, tucking into their cake...

Wonkey decided to change his hat to match the cake....

Then without any kind of warning, in comes Mechanical Mike, most put out that he was not invited to the first day of Summer Pie/French Fancy party, pushed Wonkey roughly out of the way, pinched his hat and helped himself to the cake, tut tut...

Dixie and One Eyed Wonkey were very upset and told him so, but you know how monkeys can be when they decide to get upto monkey business.

Now I have a dilemma....my sister in law, who lives in Australia, has arranged for many family members to meet up and stay in the Loire Valley, France soon, which we are looking forward to very much....but I am worried sick as to whom I should asked to accompany us. Wonkey Donkey came with us to Kent for the seaside air, but who should come to France? Should it be One eyed Wonkey's turn or Dixie Donkey?

I may have to toss a coin.

Mechanical Mike will certainly not be asked after his dreadful and anti-social behaviour of today.

Any help in this matter would be most welcome.
All of this aside, happy summertime to all our dear friends near and far.

Goodness me there has been a debate over at at my friend Niki's blog nostalgiaatthestonehouse Niki raises the worrying issues of small business High Street shop decline, amongst other points.

The girl works so hard at keeping her beautiful shop going in very difficult times, she must be exhausted from trying to stock and run the business. She is so talented and makes beautiful bags and dolls too, aswell as having the most gorgeous home...

I really don't know how she does it.

Hard economic times faced by us all, so to me, it is such a shame that some people have to leave upsetting comments and not have the bottle to put a name to their point of view.

If you have the time to read Niki's post and comments, I am sure you will join with me in congratulating her in being hard working and tenacious in keeping her wonderful business alive, for us all to enjoy and feel inspired by, in the flesh at Shepton Mallet and/or online.

Hello .. Happy June!

Thank you to all new Followers for my new blog shop and all the good wishes too...I have even had some sales...so a HUGE BIG thank you to you all.

Sorry to be a misery but I have not been well just of late ...Doctor's advice to stop taking anti D's, cold turkey, believe me, not advisable....so all my plans, ideas and ambitions for my blog etc. have been on the back burner over the last week or two.

But I have the Fair on Saturday, I spoke of in my last post and it is such a lovely evening here to take a photo or two, I thought I would show you a little of the stock I am taking with me....

A stunning quilt, all the way from Texas...

Another, from Kentucky, all hand stitched, with hundreds of individual pieces of 30's? fabrics...

Look at all of those tiny stitches....

Just had to pop this one in....the apricot peach pink of this David Austin Rose 'The Mayflower' is breathtaking.

Continuing....A pair of Sanderson 50's single twin bedcovers with one matching curtain...

handmade long handled bags...this one is made from a cashmere cardigan. Embellished with Feedsack patchwork, hand and machine embroidery...

Anoher bag made from French linen and embellished with Feedsack patchwork and a hand embroidered, antique French monogram.

Again French linen with American patchwork and Suffolk Puffs, again American Feedsack (Yo yos).

So there are a few items coming along to the V&H Textile Fair at Chipping Sodders on Saturday. I have the current husband doing all the driving and donkey work. He deserves some sort of Medal for his constant support and patience.

Anyroadup...sitting having a natter at my Mum and Dads the other day, I had half an eye on this dog ornament. You know when you are familiar with things and then one day they strike you in a different sort of way??? (He is made from one sheet of very heavy metal, moulded, somehow, into this shape).
So, I 'borrowed' him from Mother and had a practice on the sewing machine, trying to recreate his shape....

along with bunnies and
birdies too...

and here he is, still wip but sort of transformed from 3D to 2D. He's waiting for his master/mistress to come home...hoping to make into a purse tonight.

A brooch or two too.

Don't know why I've added this one really but the brooches all have the basic outline machine stitched. More stitching to do this evening.

Hello!

I had to share with you, pics of what is currently gently blowing dry on my washing line.

Very old patchwork, recently purchased, hand stitched, with the most delightful, colourful prints.

A joyous hand crafted creation, with a story no doubt, to tell. For me, a pleasure to own.

Not only have I gloried in the texture, print and coloures but also in washing it. I find I am now of an age, I have to admit, that buying an old textile and gently soaking it in a bucket (only if appropriate, of course) and gently stirring until the water turns an ugly brown, brings a smile of satisfaction and when the washing is complete and the piece has either been hand or machine washed and is ready to dry, the feeling is almost excitement...

Huh, what is that all about?

Excitement used to be when Earth, Wind and Fire released a new LP.

Or I got asked out by the fella I fancied (sadly, that rarely happened),

receiving my wages in cash in a brown envelope and having the lot to spend on clothes and going out to the pub and dancing to Boogie Nights.

Then life changed, I met the current husband and let's say, life got all of a sudden...different.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am no domestic goddess. A launderess I am not. I do not iron socks and knickers like my dear mother in law...but as time has gone by, I am getting a strange sense of deep satisfaction to have a washing line of clothing drying on a warm, blowy spring day...unlike in the winter when washing is draped over radiators and airers etc. etc. (I am probably one of the remaining few who do not have a tumble dryer).

So here I am, having bared my all and confessed that bringing out stains and dirt from vintage fabrics does it for me!

Oh gawwwd...

I hasten to add that this is not my only pleasure in life :-)

If vintage fabrics are part of your life too, don't forget that there will be many gorgeous fabric, haberdashery and vintage textiles to be had at the vintageandhandmadetextilefair 4th June, at Chipping Sodbury.

Adventures of Wonkey Donkey as he travels to Kent

Hello,

as we live in the centre of England, we don't get to see much of the Seaside. Wonkey, in a previous life, must have been a Seaside Donkey, taking children rides along the sandy beaches, this may account for the loss of his ears, which he never speaks of. Anyhoo, he told me that he would very much like to visit a beach and smell the sea air once again.

I suggested that if we visited the Kent coastline, maybe we could also visit two iconic gardens??? He agreed, he's a most likeable Donkey.

So, here we are hurtling down the motorway past Heathrow Airport.

We, of course, had the obligatory coffee along the way.

He insisted on standing on the dashboard, which wasn't very safe, but he wanted to see where he was going, as he felt a bit travel sick...

Well, we booked into our American Western, Cowboys and Indian themed Hotel for two nights at Royal Tunbridge Wells and we all enjoyed a glass or two of very cold beer. Set 'em up Jo!

So, next day, bright and early off we set to Great Dixter.

Here is Wonkey admiring the view from beside the Garden Nursery.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you that this place is truely heaven on earth, do I?

Here is Wonkey in the meadow, I just stopped him from nibbling the meadow Orchids.

He is is, admiring the view again across Great Dixter.

I wanted the current husband to take a pic of me, as I have wanting to visit this place for so long and finally, we had made it!

Just too beautiful for my limited vocabulary...

Wonkey agreed.

We booked out of our Rootin' Tootin' accommodation at Royal Tunbridge Wells and headed south for Sissinghurst.

Again, what can I say that hasn't been said about Sissinghurst!

Wonkey having eaten his lunch, looked out of the restaurant window, whilst we ate our delicious lunch.

Partly moated and magical in every sense...

Here he is again, being very brave and looking out from the tower.

Well the world and his wife were at Sissinghurst, so we moved on.

In the evening we ate fish and chips on Winchelsea Beach. Miles of deserted beach, brisk wind, but no too cold and Wonkey was very happy. I think I saw a tear in his eye, but that may have just been the bracing wind.

Saturday, I woke, breakfasted and sped off at top speed to Cranbrook, to meet my bloggy friend Lettuceleaf, (she is pictured here with her 'wicked stepdaughter') who is the co-organiser of kitschandstitch fair. Oh, it was so lovely to meet my lovely friend and to have time to have a really good look around the fabulous fair and bump into another friend, who I was not expecting to see! Wonkey stayed in the car with the current husband, as 'vintage' ain't their thing!

After a wonderfully inspiration morning, we found ourselves at Dungeness. Derek Jarman's garden was beautiful in it's simplicity. He worked with what he had and I thought it was stunning.

I also really enjoyed the landscape...

full of atmosphere and interest...

Wonkey was getting a bit fed up now and wanted something to eat...

we walked ...

and found Wonkey something green to eat.

Next day, I had to go back to Great Dixter, not particularly to look around the gardens again, but to just be there. Wonkey was rather pleased, as there was some sweet, juicy, green grass to eat.

Daisy Baby (left) went to stay at her Granny and Grandads for the weekend and Billy Button Nose came with us and I am very proud to say that he was a well behaved boy.

Another little doggy of mine, didn't sell on the day, so he came back home with us....I call him Rocky.
